Improving the Global Shellz Wiki
You can help us make the Wiki a better place by helping us maintain the Wiki and by contributing quality articles. Remember that the Wiki is a information source for everyone at Global Shellz and even for people that are not members. Writing quality content helps us build the community, and it also has the bonus of attracting quality new members to our community.
How to Contribute
- Before you start working on the Wiki you need to get a Wiki Account. Please use your Global Shellz user name or registered Freenode nickname for your Wiki account.
Maintaining the Wiki
- There are several ways you can help maintain the Wiki. You can report spam articles, tag uncategorised content, or even tag content that needs to be updated. If you need more ideas on how to help maintain the Wiki without writing your own content come into IRC and talk with an administrator or Wiki administrator.
Reporting Spam
- You can report spam content to Gry on Freenode #globalshellz.
- Report the username of the person that created the page, rather than the URL of the spam.
- If Gry isn't available on IRC you can leave a report here. You could also contact one of the other Wiki admins.
Tag Content
- The easiest way to tag uncategorised content is to go to the uncategorised content page and check for pages that belong in obvious categories such as HOWTO, NeedsUdpate, and Incomplete.
- Tag a page by editing it and inserting the proper category at the bottom of the page.
- Example: Tag a page as a how to by adding this line at the bottom of the page
[[Category:HOWTO]]
- Example: Tag a page as a how to by adding this line at the bottom of the page
- Tag a page by editing it and inserting the proper category at the bottom of the page.
- Tagging articles is a great way to help others find articles as well as a way of identifying projects for Wiki authors to complete.
Updating and Completing Articles
- You can also help us by looking after articles that have become out of date or ones that were abandoned before completion.
- NeedsUpdate is a list of articles tagged as needing update.
- Incomplete is a list of articles tagged as incomplete.
- Not all articles that need work have been tagged. If you see one that needs work feel free to fix it up. If you can't fix it up yourself, please tag it so someone else can easily find it.
Writing Articles
- Before you write an article please take a few things into consideration.
- Is there already an article about the subject in the Wiki?
- If there is already an article on the subject, it may be better to expand or update the article. There is no reason for duplicate works in the Wiki. Duplicates just make it harder for people to find useful content, and it makes it harder on the Wiki admins.
- Do you have the time and expertise to write a good, solid article?
- There is a good chance that people will use your article for reference. It needs to be accurate and easy to understand. Posting inaccurate information only lowers your level of credibility and hurts the community as a whole. If you don't know the subject well enough to thoroughly explain it, don't post it!
- Write your own content. Cut and paste is not good enough for the Wiki and you probably will not get credit for your work. Anyone can google - give us something good!
- In case you didn't understand, I'll say it in a different way:
- Do not submit copyrighted work without permission!
- Don't be a lamer, cutting and pasting is bad!
- In case you didn't understand, I'll say it in a different way:
- Please use templates as appropriate:
- You can add the translations template to the top of the page by adding this as the first line of your page:
{{Languages}}
- You can add the translations template to the top of the page by adding this as the first line of your page:
- Please help us maintain the Wiki by properly categorising your page.
- Since this is a HOWTO I would accomplish this by adding the following line to the bottom of the page:
[[Category:HOWTO]]
- Since this is a HOWTO I would accomplish this by adding the following line to the bottom of the page:
- Is there already an article about the subject in the Wiki?
Get Credit for Your Work
- You can earn GSP for your work on the Wiki. Log onto Freenode and join #globalshellz, then use the !submit command to put your work in the review queue. An admin will evaluate your work and award GSP when time allows.
- The following is the correct syntax of the command:
!submit http://www.globalshellz.org/topic/101-is-the-wookie-real
Final Words
- But most importantly, have fun and enjoy being part of the community. Let's work together to make Global Shellz (and the Global Shellz Wiki) a fun place to hang out and call our Internet home.
