Public ZNC HOWTO

This guide will show you how to setup your ZNC account, which you receive with your shell!

Contents

First Login

Please do make sure you have logged into the shell at least once, and have changed your password. Once you do so your ZNC will become active. Your ZNC does not count as a background process or one of your ports.

Understand the Rules

You can only have one User on the main ZNC server, if you need to have addition users please do configure your own ZNC server. The only rule is don't do something utterly stupid, like getting the server k-lined from an IRC network.

Logging in

First thing is first, we need to login to the web interface and configure your ZNC User. The web interface can be out at https://us.gshellz.org:8500/ or https://eu.gshellz.org:8500/ . If you get a warning about the certificate not being trusted, or etc, you may just approve it. This happens since the SSL certificate used on the ZNC is self-signed.

You will now be presented with this:

Your username and password will be exactly as your shell username and password, even if the password changes.

Editing Preferences

After you login, click on Your Settings and you should be at the screen displayed. Here is the easy part, configuring your ZNC. You won't need to change your username or password, so skip the Authentication section unless you want to restrict access to certain IPs, if not then just leave this blank as well. Now head over to the IRC Information section.

IRC Information

Here you will need to setup your Nickname, Alternative Nickname, Ident, Realname, VHost, Quit Message and IRC Servers. There is also an option to put your ZNC online or offline, leave this checked. Now fill in the appropriate fields.

Modules

Modules can add functionality to your ZNC. For example the buffextras module, when activated, will record Join, Part, and Quits, something the buffer doesn't record by default. The awaynick module will automatically set a different nick once you have disconnected from your ZNC, you can specify this nick in the box next to the module. To enable a module, you simply check the box next to it. It is, however, allowed to skip this step.

Channels

IMPORTANT: Before adding Channels please save your current configuration or you may LOSE your configuration. After you do save, you can click Add to configure a channel. The default buffer if 50, but some keep it at 100 or even 250. You may change it as you wish, as this is the chat before you connected to the ZNC. So say you connected to the ZNC, and your buffer is 25 for that channel, then you would see the last 25 messages from that channel. Keep Save to Config checked, and hit add.

Remainder of Configuration

The remainder of the configuration is not necessary for your ZNC to work, and is usually best when kept as is. If you are an advanced user you may try to use these. You may now move on to connect.

US Server Details

The ZNC server details are as follows.

  • Server: us.gshellz.org
  • Port: 8500
  • SSL: Yes
  • Server Password: username:password

The server password is in the form of your username then a colon (:) followed by your password.

Europe Server Details

The ZNC server details are as follows.

  • Server: eu.gshellz.org
  • Port: 8500
  • SSL: Yes
  • Server Password: username:password

The server password is in the form of your username then a colon (:) followed by your password.

Connecting

Most clients, like XChat, irssi, and Colloquy can connect to the server with the following command: /server -ssl us.gshellz.org 8500 username:password Note: For Mirc you need the following command, but you need the OpenSSL binaries found here.

  • US: /Server us.gshellz.org:+8500 user:password
  • EU: /Server eu.gshellz.org:+8500 user:password

With the password being what you established in the last step, you should now be connected to the ZNC! You should now see the MOTD for the IRC server your ZNC is connection to. You can now interact with the client as you would like a normal IRC server, but if you disconnect you will stay connected.
